About Us

Lough Allen Walks.

Our mission

  • We are a local community development group who have come together to identify opportunities to develop the experience of visitors to the area of Lough Allen.
  • We would like to enhance the visitor experience to the region by developing existing amenities, improving access and signage.
  • We have identified a number of local projects that, with assistance from various funding sources, would improve the visitor experience for both local, national & international visitor alike.
  • We are currently compiling an application for assitance with funding our 3 core projects: Alteen Waterfall; The Miners Way; Corry Strand.

    Alteen Water Fall

    North Leitrim, Lough Allen Walks.

    Alteen Waterfall

Set in a wooded glen, 1.5km north of Newbridge Church, Alteen waterfall is actually a series of waterfalls over the course of approx 300m, the tallest of which is approx 25m.
The waterfall benefited from a publically funded improvement scheme (FAS) in 1999 when a series of Boardwalks, steps and viewing areas were constructed to improve access. Unfortunately, these have all been neglected and fallen into a state of disrepair and access is at best, difficult.
We feel this project is worthy of funding to improve access walkways and signage.
There is a right of way providing access to the waterfall. This has been agreed by landowner.
There is land available for future car parking, agreed by same landowner.
With improved access and clever marketing, this waterfall could become the jewel in Leitrim Tourism's crown.

    Corry Strand

Set along the shores of Northern Lough Allen. Corry Strand has long been a traditional bathing and relaxation amenity. In earlier times before the regulation of the water levels in Lough Allen, Corry strand was renowned as a beautiful beach with plenty of strand. It still maintains that beauty and would benefit from additional facilities.
We feel the amenity can be enhanced by providing chidrens play facilities, adult recreational activites (outdoor gym) and improved landscaping, lighting, water access point & toilet facilities.
Ducting is already in place for future lighting and there is a metered water supply to the entrance of the strand. facilities
Corry Strand is located approx. 1 Km from the miners way trail

    Miners Way

    North Leitrim, Lough Allen Walks.

Part of the 80km miners way trails that end on Kilronan mountain, the Dowra to Drumkeerin section offers walkers a magnificent mix of hiking and walking trails that meanders through the drumlins that dominate the North Lough Allen region. Starting just North of Dowra village the trail cuts through forests and glens, crossing the Owennayle river, passing close to Alteen waterfall. As it traverses the Dawn of Hope, it opens up to magnificent views of Lough Allen, Drumshanbo and Sheemore in the distance
We feel the walk could be enhanced by improved signage and rest spots along its way to take advantage of the views.
This section of the miners way is the tread that connects our two other projects, Corry Strand & Alteen Falls
